This Saturday (11th October) sees Fletching Bonfire Society’s processions and firework display, with, of course, the perfunctionary bonfire!

The local pub closes, except to bookings, but the bonfire society runs a marquee type arrangement next door called the Firecracker Inn.

LOCATION:

Marshalled parking is at a farm, entrance @ TQ430233, which is accessed from the A272 at Piltdown.

PROCESSIONS AND TIMES:

The first procession starts at 1900 and runs north from the form up area at TQ430233 to Splayne’s Green before returning to the village for a break.  The second  procession is at 2045 and runs south towards Piltdown to “Denniker Cottage” and then back to the village to the firesite for fireworks at 2145.

For those with TomToms or other satnavs, TN22 3SP is the parking postcode, but make sure you come in from Piltdown (aim for TN22 3XP and turn left (if coming from Haywards Heath) or right (if coming from Uckfield) off the A272.

I have gotten myself a little GPS Bluetooth device, which I’ve borrowed from Eugene and I’m using a piece of J2ME software for my mobile phone called Track My Journey, which allows me to upload my journey, live, as it happens, to the TMJ website…. all very exciting. The stats on there are really good and I’ll be using it for the London to Brighton bike ride this Sunday.

I have outputted the results onto a map, so you can see where I am, when using the system!

I went up on to the South Downs near Rodmell last night.  It was a lovely evening, the warmest this year.  Found a couple of Geocaches too.  I was surprised to find three old “tankers” in a chalk pit above Northease.  I remember seeing them there about fifteen years ago, and they were still there now, all overgrown.  Quite why they are there, I am not too sure, and they probably need removing!  The last bit of the walk was through a field of Oilseed Rape, which was very yellow and had encroached onto the path somewhat!

I know a lot of people say that rape gives them hayfever, but I remember seeing somewhere it doesn’t, it’s actually another plant or crop which flowers at the same time, but isn’t as obvious as the rape, which is bright yellow so “must” be the reason!

I have taken a couple of nice rides in the last week fromHartfield along the Forest Way to Crawley Down and in the other direction to Groombridge and on to Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent.

The Forest Way (which becomes the Worth Way beyond East Grinstead) is a former railway line along the north of the Ashdown Forest.  At Groombridge the railway was not closed until 1985 and is now the preserved Spa Valley Railway, so I had to take the road to Tunbridge Wells.  An enjoyable ride, but you might want to have your tyres a bit softer, as the compacted ballast is a bit of a bone shaker!

The picture of the railway is the Spa Valley in Groombridge.  Sometime between the railway closing and the preserved railway opening, somebody built a house on it, hence the kink!

Well, Seahaven FM seems a long time ago now, and March was pretty hectic… up at 5am to write the news, get to the studio for 06:20 and start at half past….. then often going to work at Clayhill for 13:30!

The response was great and the station continues on the internet at http://seahavenfm.com.  I’m not doing a show on the online service, as I’ve got plenty to occupy me at the moment, but I’m looking forward to another month on FM in the summer.

The weather threw us a nice story one month into the broadcast, with some of the worst storms in twenty years hitting the region, and there was always plenty going on to talk about.  Where in Sussex (which has now reached almost legendary status) was very popular once again, with loads of people I’ve met commenting on it.

Breaking News

Steve Pilfold has been confirmed for Seahaven FM: the new station for Newhaven, Seaford and Peacehaven!

Steve will present the breakfast show on the station every Monday-Friday during March 2008, as the station broadcasts it’s first ever trial broadcast from brand new studios in Seaford Town Centre.

Steve, 29, from Newhaven is very excited about the prospect of broadcasting to his home area saying “It’s great that Nick and the team have put Seahaven FM together so that the area can, at last, have a community radio station which isn’t driven by the needs of shareholders or trying to cover a massive area”

Steve has broadcast the lunchtime show on Lewes’s Rocket FM for the past five years, and has gained a large following for his popular competition, “Where in Sussex“, where callers have to try and identify a location in Sussex from his clues. Steve says that listeners on Seahaven FM can look forward to not only more Where in Sussex competitions, but also his new feature “Roofing in the Gallops“, where local tradesmen can call in and get a mention and a song played while they listen to Seahaven FM at their workplace. Local people will also get the chance to talk about local issues, projects and other community related topics as guests on the show, and of course Steve will welcome any input and comments from the community, as he opens the phone-lines.

The station will start broadcasting on Sunday 2nd March at the stroke of midnight and run for twenty-eight days. It is already broadcasting test transmissions on its website at www.seahavenfm.com and will continue broadcasting online throughout the year.

If you’d like to be involved, visit the website at www.seahavenfm.com and read about the station history, its forthcoming broadcast and the plans for the future.

Well, it’s been a busy month here at Steve Towers, I’ve cleared out the spare room and a few loads worth of junk from the rest of the house, been doing overtime at work and generally lots going on…..

First off, we had the great flood of Barcombe!  Well, it was wet, wet, wet everywhere, but the water really did come up, up, up at Barcombe in Sussex.  The road to the village from the A26 was closed for a few days and locals said it was over the tops of hedges……  Made for a good, muddy ride on the Cuckoo Trail :D

Another nice ride was around what I call the “Littlington and Old Coach Road Loop” from my house to Seaford, Littlington and then along the Old Coach Road from Berwick to Firle and then back to Newhaven.  It’s just under 25 miles and not too muddy and mainly off the main roads.

Eugene and I have been doing the Engineering at the DGH in Eastbourne.  Eugene managed to burn himself on the soldering iron.  Whoops!

I found this amusing picture of me in 1995!  Up at South Barn in Seaford we’ve set up an aerial for long distance communication on the CB!  I think we got as far as Worthing lol

Last Saturday I cycled from Clapham in London to Haywards Heath in West Sussex.  This is about 75% of the London to Brighton cycle ride, which I intend to enter this year!  Nutter….

Stand by for some exciting (for me!) news in my next post!

Well, here we are, ten days in to 2008!  Hope you all had a nice December, it’s been very busy for me and I keep managing to break my bike.  Getting it looked at for a warranty fault next Tuesday and hopefully Eugene and I have cured the problem of the popping tyres (three split tyre walls in three months!).

Hoping for some drier weather so I can do some proper riding…. the weight loss seems to have stalled at the moment and I want to lose another stone by Easter!
