Fletching Bonfire 2009
Due to problems with crowds at previous Fletching Bonfires, this year’s event’s parking is only available to those with passes to enter the village as part of the procession from late afternoon.
Fletching Bonfire Society have requested that, unless you are local to Fletching (ie not Uckfield, Lewes etc) that you do not attempt to visit this year’s event.
Roads into the village will be CLOSED to ALL TRAFFIC except for those with passes and the road blocks will be a CONSIDERABLE DISTANCE from the village itself. It should also be noted that the roads will be closed from LATE AFTERNOON. The pubs in the village are also closed to non-locals on the night.
Alternative bonfire events on the night include Nevill in Lewes and Eastbourne. The event is NOT on the usual weekend this year and there will be NO bonfire events on 10th October.
Edition!
where do you get your information as it is incorrect !!
Secretary
Fletching Bonfire Society
I was asked not to advertise the details of this year’s celebrations and also told that from 6:30pm roads would be closed and the closures would be further out than usual this year, and that anyone who didn’t have a pass or in costume would not be allowed through. I was also told (from an online source, who I believe is a member of your society) that this was due to crowd issues and that this was partly due to mummy and daddy dropping off the “little darlings” from Uckfield etc. I was also informed that there was trouble getting bands through and torch marshals were still busy dealing with parking etc last year when the procession was forming up.
I made a presumption that the Firecracker Inn would be operating this year and that the pubs would be operating their usual policy.
Rather than abrupt comments posted to blogs, it would help if people actually said what part or parts of the post are “incorrect”, then they can be corrected. As you have made the sweeping statement “your information is incorrect”, can I presume this is in regard to ALL the information and that roads will not be closed further out, the pubs will be open and you’d like as many people to attend as possible?
what is the point in calling it a bonfire if your not going to have a bonfire, and why are you soo strict on everything! chilll man
Dear who ever it may consern,
we are just writing to say that we are very apologiteic for are comment above. As you may know we do not understand the reason why only locals are to attended this event, we feel let down! as we have family coming from all over the world, who now! cannot attend to what we thought would be a good night, but we now realise that due to your srtict ways this would not be so.
thankyou for your time
Yours Sincerley Ellie and Danni aged 16+

There is a bonfire at Fletching, it’s just the organisers have had trouble in recent years with crowd issues, as the village is very small. There are other bonfire events around Sussex on the same night, with Nevill in Lewes much better placed to deal with larger numbers of people. Alternatively there are Hailsham and Hastings bonfires on the weekend before on the 17th October and several others, including Newick, the weekend after.
actually nevill bonfire is only on a housing estate no where near the size of a village, like Fletching, talk about overkill, just means we will be there by lunchtime.
Fletching was magic untill a couple of years ago . . . Politics and the wrong people at the helm are destroying the society and their bonfire night . . Lets hope the real bonfire boyes and belles there wake up and take stock and sort it all out before Fletching is history.
So Fletching bonfire is only open to people with passes then? And if i walk up to the police barrier, they will ask me for a pass, i will say i don’t have one and will be turned away? Is this correct?
Perhaps a way around this (if this is the case) is just to walk to Fletching at about 5pm?
Thanks
No, it’s only the in village parking which is closed early to non-permit holders, I believe
Right ok, so i will be able to get through the police barriers at any time without a pass? Because me and a lot of my friends are quite unsure as to what the plan is.
so locals from newick, north chailey etc. are still aloud to attend the event without guardians as such?? as my parents aren’t bonfire goers as such.. and as I think fletching is one of the better events I would like to be able to freely attend this year??
I think the bonfire society just want lower numbers than in previous years, as it is primarily an event for the people in the village to celebrate. The village is quite small in comparison to places like Newick (31st October), and I think the committee have moved it from a night when they were the only ones to this week, so that it clashes with events such as Nevill in Lewes, which are much easier to access by public transport and by car, have far more room for spectators and are just in a better position generally to have visitors from outside of the immediate area. I think it is a shame that it clashes, as it was probably in my top five and I won’t be able to attend as I’m at Nevill with my society.
Ahh thank you. i shall be attending fletching then, i thought it was a complete ban on others going down to fletching but i see there logic in it now, cheers for clearing it up.
Can I just check I’m reading this loud and clear Fletching Bonfire Society will be marching this coming saturday evening (24th October). Would be brilliant if antone could clarify this.
Fletching are alive and kicking and will be as normal on the 24th. . Ish
Ok now i’m confused. Say you come from Piltdown and get some exercise and walk in to Fletching will you be allowed in past 6:30?
I get that the road is closed to cars and busses and stuff, but what about people who dont mind walking?
You can walk in, yes.
The Firecracker Inn welcomes EVERYONE and ANYONE to Fletching Bonfire tonight. The roads are closed to through traffic as usual but you will be able to walk in. Enjoy the proccession, treat yourself to a burger or hot dog and the well stocked bar will be here too. The fireworks will be spectacular as ever and we would greatly appreciate your generous contrabutions without which we would not be able to host an event such as this. Thank you for your support
EXCELLENT!
I love the Firecracker Inn and I love Fletching Village! I’m a bit sad I can’t go this year because my society is supporting Nevill, who always do our firework display for us
Dear Mr Host, I would be extremely grateful if next year you could contact me directly so that I may provide you with the correct information for bonfire night. thank you Julie
Fletching Bonfire will be holding their celebrations on the 23rd October 2010, there will be no restrictions for cars the road closures will be in force from 6.00pm until 11.00pm and we ask people to be in the village by 6.00pm. The firecracker Inn will be opened as normal selling beer etc and providing hot food burgers and hot dogs. We look forward to seeing you all there.
